Details on ELMBs

   35 ATMEGA128L ELMBs are connected to 2 CANbus lines with total length of approx 330 m. To avoid cross-talk between different detectors and their electronics, it was decided to have independent ELMBs for each detectors or sub-system, whenever possible. The distribution of the ELMBs over the experimental hall is optimized in order to have the shortest wiring connections to sensors or monitoring points.

   The monitoring is done using CANOpen OPC Server (CanOpc.exe), running on PCCOMPASS08 (Windows XP), installed in DCS room HNB423. The configuration file for the OPC Server is located in the "OPC" directory. A PVSS API manager "PVSS00opc -num 7", as a client, connects to the OPCCanOpen Server. 2 ports of a Kvaser PCI-CAN Q (4 ports) interface card are used (the card is in 4 indepent ports configuration). The CANbus network consists of 2 CANbus branches, of 120 m and 210 m. Due to their long length (>50 m), cable with 6 conducting wires with cross-section 0.5 mm2 for each is used for CANbus1 and CANbus2 (multiconductor screened cable layer twisted, CERN catalogue - 04.21.51.106.0).

  
A special transition board is used for the ELMB connection to the network cable (see the scheme here). The wires of thick cable are ended by pins and screws on board contacts, which has printed wiring between to Dsub 9 pin connector. The ELMB CANbus connector connects to the transition board via a short(0,5 m) flat cable.

   Each ELMB has its own local power supply and there is only one central power supply for the CANbus. The system has full optocoupling between nodes connected to CANbus line. The power supply for the CANbus provides 12V and a current of 1.5-2 Amps, being located in the DCS room, close to the PCCOMPASS08. This powers the CANbus receivers/transmitters, which are optically insulated from the ELMB internal circuit. The ELMBs have their own local power supplies. As a rule, each ELMB has a power supply for its analog part and another for the digital part. In some cases one common power supply is used for both parts. The nominal voltage of the power supplies is 12V. There are 2 types of power supplies used as local: Switching power supply OMRON model S82K with 12V output, Imax=1.5A (mounted in a rail and with protection cover); and Regulated Adapter type EP2, FRIWO with output 12V, Imax=0.5A.

   Plugged to the ELMB's motherboard, 2 types of adapters are used, depending of the input signals to the ELMB: High performance Pt100 adapters, with Rc = 3.9 KOhm, Rs = 100 Ohm (to be used with Pt4w temperature sensors); and Differential attenuators with 1:100 divider (100 KOhm/1 KOhm).

   Different kinds of sensors are used, depending on the parameters to be monitored. For temperature measurements we use Pt100 sensors. The humidity measurements are done using type HIH 3605A humidity sensors. For pressure measurements, type 144S PCB Series is used. The magnetic field is measured with UGN35 Hall probe.

   In PVSS, there are several monitoring parameters with associated alarm signals defined (so that an alarm will be displayed if the read value goes out of a given min/max threshold). The alarm causes changing the background colour of the alarm text window, from green to orange or red. Also, the alarm signal will be propagated to the top of the monitoring system hierarchy and cause changing the colour of the associated detector button on the main COMPASS control panel.

   The monitoring parameters that can produce alarm signals are:

  • TARGET, RICH, MM, DC4, STRAWs, W45, MW1 and ECAL1 Temperature Sensors;

  • LV from MW1, MW2, MWPCs, ECAL1 and ECAL2;

  • MW2_gas_alarm. This parameter represents the status of gas system for MW2 detector;

  • SM1_M_F. Measurement of the stability of SM1 magnetic field - Magnets panel;

  • B6_M_F. Measurement of the stability of B6 magnetic field - Magnets panel;

  • SM2 Measurement from the NMR - Magnets panel;

  • Hall pressure - Environment Panel;

  • DAQ and Tigger room temperatures - Environment panel;

    Supply water temperature of raw water circuit (for cooling of Straws, MM and DC) - Environment panel;

    Water temperature of tank for water circuit that homegenizes temperature of DC4 frame - DC>DC4>Temperatures panel;

  • T_W_DEP; T_W_RET. These 2 parameters represent the temperatures of incoming and outgoing water in the RICH electronics cooling system - Environment panel.
     

  • Ecal1_Laser_isOn - ECAL1 panel.
